Foundations of Traditional Woodworking Series
Dates: Contact me to schedule this two day class
Materials Fee: $25
This class focuses on the use of joinery planes to make rabbet, dado, and tongue & groove joinery for furniture and cabinetry. Click here to learn about the other classes in this series.
After becoming comfortable with the basic skills of sawing to a line and using a hand plane, you’re ready to take the next step in your hand tool woodworking journey. In order to take those boards that you so nicely sawed and planed and turn them into something beautiful and functional, you will need to be able to cut and fit joinery that will help to hold your project together and give it strength.
In this class we’ll expand on what was only briefly touched upon in Hand Plane Foundations. We’ll take a detailed look at the joinery planes used to make rabbets, dados, grooves, and match joints, and also explore alternative methods for making these joints in case you don’t yet have the joinery planes to do so.
If you do own a rabbet plane, dado plane, plow plane, tongue and groove plane(s), and/or router plane, feel free to bring them with you to the class. Using your own tools for the class will help you to become more familiar with them. If you don’t (yet) own these planes, don’t worry. We will have a set available for your use.
There are no prerequisites for this class. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced woodworker looking to incorporate more hand tools into your work, you’re sure to come away from this class with some new hand tool skills and a beautiful project.
