Making a Hand Plane Shelf
My new hand plane shelf is working well, and I’m very happy with the way it turned out. I used up some of the cutoffs from building our cabin to make the shelf. All the pine started off life as 4 x 10 roof rafters. Turning them into boards for this project required planing, resawing, and more planing.
The joinery was very straightforward – mostly dados and rabbets, with dovetails at the bottom. The back boards are tongue and groove. To hang it on the wall I just put four screws through the back into the oak wall boards.
I’ll let the video provide the details.

Great video my friend! So where are you storing you longer planes? In the tool chest?
Thank Tim! Every plane that I own fits on the shelf, except for my LN No. 8. However, that is by design. The No. 8 would fit just fine in the space that is currently occupied by the Ulmia 24″ wooden jointer. Above the Ulmia jointer is a Stanley No. 7. The space between the sides is just over 24″, so the long planes fit fine.
What type of plane is used starting at 6:39? Thanks
That’s a 3/4″ Stanley No 39 dado plane. See this post.
Do you have any drawings or plans for your tills? They are beautiful and I’d like to try and build one. Even some more pictures would be great. Thank you for all you do.
No, I don’t have drawings. They were built on the fly to fit my tools.
