Record No. 050 Combination Plane Manual – Free Download
I’m going to be making a video (or a series of videos, depending upon how long it ends up) on using the Record No. 050 Improved Combination Plane. I’ve received several questions about the plane and it’s functions through both the blog and my YouTube channel, and it should also be fun to see how the combination plane compares to other, dedicated use planes.
My plane was complete, including the manual, when I bought it. I know that not everyone that gets one of these planes will get the manual with it, so I’ve created a high resolution scan of the manual that came with my plane. Feel free to download and print it for your own use.

First of all, I really want to thank you for everything youāve done and hope you will keep doing for the experienced and even more for the new woodworkers like myself. I have enjoyed all your videos, podcasts and blogs and learn so much from them. Thank you again!
Secondly, I have always wanted you to do this comparison of the Combination plane and still remember your opinion about them. As new as I am to this hobby, I have early learned that single hand planes vs the old Stanley/Record combination planes will most likely āwinā. If you could, I would rather have this comparison made with the only modern combination plane available which is the Veritas one. As I understand directly from someone that was part of the design team they improved many (if not all) of the issues the old combination planes had. If itās not possible it will still be interesting to watch and learn from your video(s) on the subject.
Thank you very much for the High resolution manual. Even though I donāt own a vintage combination plane, I do value this material for general information and for my woodworking archive. Iām also happy to know you will come back to making some videos again. I do miss them a lot: Your knowledge and way of explaining and teaching is to me one of the best. With much appreciation, Edward
Thanks Edward! I appreciate the kind words!
So I have been making videos somewhat regularly (about once a month) for the last year and a half to two years. Iām not really on any kind of schedule but they have been coming out fairly regularly. If youāve missed them just click the Free Videos link in the menu on the website and they should all be there. Theyāre on my YouTube channel too.
As for the Veritas combination plane, Iām sorry to say that I wonāt be using it for this video (or series). Itās simply not in my budget, and not even available to purchase at the moment even if it was. Itās also closer in size to the Stanley 45 or Record 405 than this Record 050. The No 050 is closer in size to the Veritas small plow.
Perhaps some day Iāll have the opportunity to repeat the test with the Veritas, or even a complete Stanley No 45/Record 405, neither of which I currently own. But for now it will be the Record 050.
thanks for sharing Bob
What’s the difference between the Record 050 and the Stanley 50?
The company name š . Seriously though, I think they’re just about identical. There may be some very minor differences, blade clamping/adjustment, etc. but they’re essentially the same plane, just like many of the other Stanley/Record versions of the same tool.
Wonderful! I own the same plane, and haven’t used it much yet. I need to plane some beads with it soon, so I’m sure your videos will help. Thanks!
You’re most welcome. I do need to get on this video, don’t I š
Yes, please! š
I’m currently making the backboards of a bookcase, and cut a bunch of rabbets for shiplap yesterday with the No.50. Was having a hard time keeping the plane plumb as I got further in the cut, and the rabbets had a tendency to go past 90 degrees. The boards are 1/2″ thick so not a lot of registration surface…was able to fine tune with a shoulder plane, but i’m guessing there’s a way to get better results. Anyway, if you want to include tips to help with that in the video – much appreciated!
