Video: How to Make a French Style Marking Gauge
My most popular video on YouTube to date has been making the French style marking gauge. The design was inspired by an article written by Dean Jansa for Popular Woodworking a number of years ago. It’s based on the gauges from the Benjamin Seaton tool chest. It’s my favorite design, because it can be unlocked, adjusted and locked again all with one hand. They’re fun to make, and a fantastic way to use up some of the small offcuts from the over flowing scrap bin. So here’s that original video for your enjoyment.
I’ve also thought up a couple of ways that this design can be improved, so I’m planning to release a new video on the improved version in the near future. Stay tuned for that!
