Chestnut Coat Rack Project Notes

DIY Reclaimed Barn Wood Coat Rack Plan Exploded

A couple of folks have asked if the chestnut coat rack project was going to be available as a course in the future. Honestly I never even thought about putting that project together as a course. It was just something that we needed for the house, and an opportunity for me to work with some uncommon lumber and a new (to me) dovetail plane. For the most part, if you’re interested in building something like it, the two videos that I already made on it show you just about the entire process.

The overview video on the entire piece can be found in this post.

The detail video on the stopped, tapered, sliding dovetail can be found here.

The only thing you can’t get from those videos are the dimensions of the parts. So since several folks have asked about it, I put together a set of project notes for the piece. If you are interested in them you can download them by clicking the photo below. Enjoy!

I’m trying this as a beginner project i.e. as graduate of hand saw foundations course. Only planned change is substituting sliding dado joints for sliding dovetail joints. 1/4 bevel edged chisel acquired, so that is what size of dados will be (knife walls then saw cuts to establish sides of dados + 1 saw cut in the middle then chiseling out from the middle to the edges). S4S pine (1×10 and 1 x 8).

Dados should work just as well!
